Certified garlic seed can be identified by the blue certificate affixed to the packaging. These certificates are issued only if the garlic complies with the S.O.C. specifications.
How to plant garlic seeds?
Planting is done manually or mechanically, in a ploughed, prepared and drained plot. Planting conditions are crucial to garlic emergence, uniformity and establishment. They determine part of the crop's success. Autumn garlic plants are sown between October and November. For pink spring garlic, late December to mid-February is ideal.
For green garlic, perforated plastic allows for greater earliness and size. In this case, in regions of southern France with little exposure to winter cold, the planting date can be brought forward to late September or even earlier, especially for early Primor and Germidour violet garlic. Care must be taken with row spacing, depending on the harvesting equipment used.
Depending on weather conditions at planting and soil structure, irrigation may be useful to close the furrows properly and keep the garlic cool if sown in dry conditions.
